AWS and SAP Drive New Innovations with Generative AI Integration

Generative AI solutions are now more accessible to enterprises through a new collaboration between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SAP. By integrating SAP AI Core with Amazon Bedrock’s foundation models, the partnership aims to deliver AI-driven insights and automate manual processes for enterprise customers.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SAP SE have announced a strategic partnership to enhance modern cloud enterprise resource planning (ERP) experiences with generative artificial intelligence (AI). This collaboration focuses on simplifying the adoption of the RISE with SAP solution on AWS, optimizing SAP workloads in the cloud, and embedding generative AI across critical business applications.

“AWS was the first cloud provider certified to support the SAP portfolio, and thousands of enterprises run SAP solutions on AWS to maximize their mission-critical applications,” stated Matt Garman, incoming CEO of AWS. “This collaboration enables companies to leverage generative AI for greater efficiency, responsiveness, and sustainability.”

Christian Klein, CEO of SAP SE, emphasized, “Partnerships like our collaboration with AWS are vital as we integrate generative AI solutions across our ERP applications, allowing customers to innovate rapidly. We are also supporting Amazon’s transformation journey by adopting RISE with SAP for initiatives like Project Kuiper, aimed at expanding global broadband access.”

Generative AI Models Integrated in SAP AI Core

SAP AI Core’s generative AI hub now provides secure access to a variety of large language models (LLMs) from Amazon Bedrock, including Anthropic Claude 3 and Amazon Titan. This integration allows SAP customers to incorporate high-performance LLMs and other foundation models into their business applications, enabling customized AI solutions with their data. Many customers use Amazon Bedrock to build and scale generative AI applications with models from leading AI companies like AI21 Labs, Anthropic, Cohere, Meta, Mistral AI, Stability AI, and Amazon.

The integration aims to accelerate the adoption of generative AI and modernize key business processes built on SAP solutions. These innovations are available for use within RISE with SAP and intelligent scenario lifecycle management, either as integration components or directly on SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). SAP and AWS plan to expand the Bedrock capabilities in the generative AI hub to enhance embedded AI functionalities across SAP’s cloud solutions, including finance and product lifecycle management.

Using AWS Chips to Train and Deploy SAP AI Solutions

SAP’s use of AWS Graviton3 chips in supporting SAP HANA Cloud enhances performance, cost-efficiency, and energy savings. Graviton3-based Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances have provided up to 30% better compute performance for analytical workloads and a 45% reduction in carbon footprint for SAP HANA Cloud. Building on this success, SAP and AWS are collaborating on Graviton4 for future SAP HANA Cloud iterations and other SAP applications to further improve efficiency.

Additionally, SAP plans to use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips, designed for AI and machine learning workloads, to train and deploy future SAP Business AI offerings. In a proof of concept, SAP engineers achieved a significant reduction in training time for generative AI LLMs by utilizing Trainium and Inferentia2-based instances, cutting down the process from 23 days to just two days. This accelerates development while maintaining high accuracy and reliability.

Enhanced Performance for RISE with SAP on AWS

Thousands of customers have chosen RISE with SAP on AWS for their complex, global SAP implementations. The newly available Amazon EC2 High Memory U7i instances offer up to 32TiB of memory in a single instance, supporting expanding SAP HANA database requirements and improving performance for memory-intensive applications like SAP S/4HANA Cloud as part of RISE with SAP.

Amazon’s Project Kuiper Adopts RISE with SAP

Amazon’s Project Kuiper, aimed at delivering global satellite broadband, has selected RISE with SAP to manage its supply chain and manufacturing operations efficiently. By running SAP solutions on AWS, Kuiper leverages the latest SAP capabilities to drive impactful transformations, improve decision-making, and enhance overall productivity. This initiative is part of Project Kuiper’s mission to close the digital divide by providing fast, affordable internet access to underserved regions. RISE with SAP enables Kuiper to focus on innovation by offering reliable and scalable infrastructure for modern cloud ERP as a managed service.
